Beginners Leadlighting and Introduction to Copperfoil

Beginners Course

This course runs for 9 weeks, one evening per week for 3 hours.You will learn:

  • safety issues
  • how to measure up a window accurately
  • how to draw up a design
  • how to cut glass
  • how to lead up a panel
  • how to solder
  • puttying
  • blackening and polishing
  • basic copperfoiling

You will complete a leadlight panel approximately 20cm x 35cm to take home at the end of the course as well as a small copperfoil piece.

Intermediate/Advanced

Workshops are available for students to work on a project of their own choice under the supervision of an experienced tutor. Workshops are also held for specific subjects such as advanced reinforcement techniques.

Fusing and Slumping

Two and a half day weekend workshop

This course starts n a Friday night and continues on Saturday and Sunday. Over the two and a half days you will produce 2 pieces to take home, approxamately 23cm squared. Below is an overview of what will be covered during this time.

Friday Night:

  • Theory for Float glass slumping.
  • Preparation of pattern using fibre paper.

Saturday:

  • Finalise design for float glass and put work into kiln.
  • Discuss firing sequence.
  • Theory for fusing with System 96.
  • Select pattern for coloured project.
  • Start cutting out glass for coloured project.

Sunday:

  • Open kiln and discuss results of Float glass slumping.
  • Prepare kiln shelf and fire dry.
  • Continue to work on coloured project.
  • Place coloured project into kiln and fire.

Copperfoiling (lampshades and jewel boxes)

Intermediate workshops on various projects

Basic glass cutting techniques are usually taught in the leadlighting course.

Intermediate workshops in copperfoil are offered several times a year, depending on demand.

Workshops are usually centred around a particular project, such as the creation of lamps or suncatchers.

Traditional stained glass

Must have experience in either Leadlight or Copperfoil.

Traditional stained glass is the art of painting glass. The glass provides colour, and oxides painted onto the glass block the passage of light through parts of the glass. The glass is then fired in a kiln to fix the colour.

The guild offers classes in the basic techniques of traditional glass painting.

Mosaics

8 weeks, one evening per week for 3 hours

Mosaics are designs or pictures created by embedding small pieces of glass, stone, terracotta etc. into a bed of cement or other form of fixitive.

During this course you will complete a project of either a wall plaque, terracotta dish or a stepping stone.

Process:

Choose a suitable design

Seal any porous surfaces
Transfer the design onto your piece
Select appropriate coloured glass to suit your design
Cut glass for the design. Use glass cutter or mosaics cutter.
Adhere tiles to your piece with suitable adhesive
Apply grout

Sand engraving

2 consecutive Saturdays

Sand engraving, also known as sandblasting and sand carving, is a technique primarily used to give decorative effect such as lettering and carvings seen in doors and windows.

You will complete 2 samples (a bird design and a sailboat design) to learn the techniques of sand engraving. More than one layer of sandblasting is done to give the piece a 3 dimensional look.

Each pupil may choose what he or she would like to do for the remainder of the course. Suitable designs will be suggested by the tutor, but there is the option for students to select their own design if it is appropriate for the class.
